Formal observations include an explicit evaluation component or rating against the instructional framework. These ratings are then included in any evaluation system managed by the group administrator, making the formal setting ideal for districts that wish to use ADVANCEfeedback® as a human capital management tool. Also, it should be noted that before a formal feedback report is sent to the teacher for acceptance, it goes to the School Administrator for review. This is to support dialogue around evaluation components and ratings between the teacher and a supervisor.
Informal observations do not include ratings. Observers still give written feedback on the videos or live observations, and may make note of ratings for their own benefit, however their ratings entries are not shared with anyone and their feedback goes directly to the teacher to support coaching.
